The Coral park is a newly opened unique nature travel destination on a private island, which offers a combination of luxury bungalows along the beach, with a wide variety of fully developed nature trails in the Reef Sanctuary, around the island, in a mangrove pool and through the forest covering the island.

South-west of Zanzibar town from the beach at Mbweni, is covered by 16 ha of undisturbed forest and surrounded by a virgin coral reef. The island can be reached in a 30-minute boat ride from Mbweni beach. The island has been developed into a Nature Reserve, which comprises:

  • The Chumbe Reef Sanctuary, the first gazetted Marine Park in Tanzania, one of the world’s most beautiful coral gardens and the best-preserved shallow reef on the East African Coast. The sanctuary has more than 200 years species of pristine stone corals, about 370 species of fish, and turtles, dolphins regularly passing by. This spectacular reef can be observed by snorkelling along specially designed "Marine Nature Trails" under the guidance of trained Park Rangers.
  • The Chumbe Forest Reserve, a coral rag forest with a unique flora.

  • Abundant wildlife of birds, crabs, etc. including the rare nocturnal Coconut crab (on the red list of IUCN). The Forest Nature Trails can also be visited under the guidance of trained Park Rangers.
  • A Historic Lighthouse built by the British in 1904, which can be climbed by visitors for a breathtaking view around the island, reaching up to Zanzibar and the Tanzanian mainland coast.
